Audiobooks used to be expensive. Hiring a narrator and a studio could cost more than many self-published authors earn from a book in a year. Amazon KDP’s virtual voice option changes that by letting you create an audiobook from your eBook using AI narration.
In this guide, I’ll explain what KDP virtual voice audiobooks are, who can create them, how the process works, and what to know before you start. If you are still building your KDP income, you may also like my post on how I got 86 Amazon KDP orders in one day.

What Is a KDP Virtual Voice Audiobook?
KDP virtual voice audiobooks are narrated by computer-generated speech instead of a human narrator. You create them from an eligible Kindle eBook inside your KDP Bookshelf, and they are sold on Audible and Amazon with a label showing they were made with virtual voice. KDP has offered this as a beta program, free for participating authors.
Why Authors Are Choosing KDP Virtual Voice Audiobooks
For most self-published authors, the biggest barrier to audiobooks has always been cost and time. With KDP virtual voice audiobooks, the main benefits are:
- No production cost: KDP has offered virtual voice audiobook creation for free during the beta, so you don’t pay for a narrator or studio time.
- Speed: You can set up an audiobook in a few minutes from a book that is already published, instead of waiting weeks for a human narrator.
- Wider reach: KDP says these audiobooks can be found wherever Audible audiobooks are sold, including Amazon, Audible, Alexa and Amazon Music Unlimited.
- Control over the result: You can pick a voice, change voices by chapter and fix pronunciation yourself.
- A new format for the same book: You are not writing anything new. You are adding another product to a book you already wrote, which is one of the easiest ways to grow your KDP income.
KDP Virtual Voice Audiobooks Eligibility: Can Your eBook Qualify?
Your eBook must meet the requirements in KDP’s eligibility and troubleshooting guide. In short, your book needs to:
- Be Live (not in “Publishing” status, and not a pre-order)
- Be reflowable, not fixed format
- Have a Kindle Interactive (NCX) table of contents
- Have a cover that meets eBook cover criteria
- Have a primary language of English, Spanish, Italian or French
- Have no existing Audible audiobook (audiobooks published outside Audible do not affect this)
- Have a title under 200 characters and no more than 1,000 chapters
- Have no unsupported HTML, such as superscript or subscript, in the book description
After your eBook goes Live, KDP runs an eligibility check, which can take a few hours. If you are eligible, you will see Add Audible audiobook with virtual voice next to the book on your Bookshelf. If not, click Why isn’t my eBook eligible? to see the reasons.
Tip: Kindle Create builds the NCX table of contents automatically, which solves one of the most common eligibility problems. Good keywords and clean formatting also help your eBook itself rank, so read my guides on KDP keyword research and KDP SEO.
Common Eligibility Problems and How to Fix Them
If you do not see the audiobook option, the cause is usually one of a few fixable issues. Here is what to check first:
- Missing table of contents: Your eBook needs a Kindle Interactive (NCX) table of contents. Rebuild the book in Kindle Create, which generates it automatically, then upload the new file.
- Fixed-layout format: Only reflowable eBooks qualify. If your book is fixed layout, re-create it as a reflowable eBook.
- Unsupported HTML in the description: Remove superscript, subscript and similar tags from your eBook description.
- Unsupported language: Check that your primary language is set to English, Spanish, Italian or French.
- Existing Audible audiobook: If an Audible audiobook already exists for the book, you cannot create a second one with virtual voice.
- Still checking eligibility: Give KDP a few hours after your eBook goes Live. If the message stays for more than five hours, contact KDP support.
After you update an ineligible eBook, the link to create an audiobook should appear once the new version is Live and passes the eligibility check again.
How to Create KDP Virtual Voice Audiobooks (Step by Step)
- Open your KDP Bookshelf and click Add Audible audiobook with virtual voice next to your eligible eBook.
- Listen to the voice samples and choose a voice.
- Optionally, edit pauses, speed and pronunciation in the Virtual Voice Studio. You can also choose different voices for different chapters.
- Set your list price.
- Click Publish audiobook.
After review, the audiobook can go live on Audible and Amazon within about 72 hours. KDP explains each step in its getting started guide for virtual voice audiobooks.
Updating Your Audiobook After Publishing
You do not have to republish your eBook to improve your audiobook. According to KDP, you can make three kinds of changes directly in the audiobook setup: edit the list price, select a different virtual voice, or modify the audio. If you switch voices, the edits you made earlier in the Virtual Voice Studio are carried over to the new voice, which saves a lot of rework.
This is useful if early listeners find a voice too fast or a name is pronounced incorrectly. Treat your first version as a starting point and refine it over time, just as you would update the keywords and description of your eBook.
Formatting Tips for Better Audio
- Format footnotes as superscripts or subscripts so they are not read aloud.
- Your audiobook must follow the same content quality guidelines as your eBook.
- Listen to the whole audiobook and fix names, brand words and unusual terms using the pronunciation tools.
KDP Virtual Voice Audiobooks and Kindle+
Amazon has also added audiobooks to its Kindle+ subscription. KDP virtual voice audiobooks in KDP Select are included automatically, and eligible ACX audiobooks can be enrolled from the Bookshelf.
If your eBook is enrolled in KDP Select, the virtual voice audiobook is enrolled in KDP Select too, and only your eBook stays available through Kindle Unlimited. Payout for audiobook listening can differ from what your eBook earns for pages read. KDP also says these audiobooks are not currently eligible for Free Book Promotions or Kindle Countdown Deals. Read KDP’s KDP Select help page for the latest rules, before you enroll in KDP Select.
Thinking about going wide instead? If you do not want to stay exclusive to Amazon, a distributor such as Draft2Digital (referral link) can help you publish your eBook to other stores and libraries from one dashboard. Just remember that KDP Select requires exclusivity for your eBook, so choose one path per book.
KDP Virtual Voice Audiobooks Pricing and Royalties
Pricing and royalty rules have changed during the beta. When the program launched, authors could price audiobooks between $3.99 and $14.99 and earn a 40% royalty. Please check KDP’s current “Pricing, royalties, and reports for audiobooks” page before planning your income. To see how royalties work for your eBooks and paperbacks, read my KDP royalties report explained.
Availability: Check Your Own Bookshelf
KDP virtual voice audiobooks launched in beta for the US marketplace, and KDP has said it plans to expand over time. Subscription audiobooks have also been described as US-only for now. Availability can differ by account, so the real test is whether the option appears next to your eBooks.
If it does not, check the eligibility message, subscribe to KDP’s news and product emails for invites and expansions, and contact KDP support.
Pros and Cons of KDP Virtual Voice Audiobooks
This is my own summary of the trade-offs, based on how the program works:
Pros
- Free to create during the beta
- Fast setup and quick publishing
- Easy to edit voice, speed, pauses and pronunciation
- Adds a new format to your existing book
Cons
- AI narration can sound less emotional than a human narrator
- Not every book or account is eligible, and availability is still limited
- Royalty and pricing rules have changed, so you need to check them again
- KDP Select exclusivity and promotion limits can affect your strategy
Are KDP Virtual Voice Audiobooks Right for You?
It works best for non-fiction, guides and informational books, where clear delivery matters more than emotional performance. For fiction with a lot of dialogue and character voices, you may prefer a human narrator through ACX. Always listen to a sample before publishing, because not every book suits an AI voice.
