Your six-step Amazon KDP roadmap
Step 1Set up your Amazon KDP account
Create your KDP account, complete your author profile, and add your tax and payment details so you can get paid.
Step 2Choose a niche and validate your idea
Check that readers are buying in your niche before you write a single page.
Step 3Write your book, or hire a writer
Write the manuscript yourself, with AI help where it fits, or hire a ghostwriter.
Step 4Design the cover and format the interior
Get the trim size, spine width and bleed right, so Amazon accepts your files first time.
Step 5Optimize your listing
Choose keywords and categories, then write a title and description that earn the click.
Step 6Price, launch and grow
Set a price you can profit from, launch with a plan, and learn from your sales reports.
Five beginner mistakes to avoid
- Writing before checking demand. Validate your niche first.
- Ignoring Amazon’s rules. Follow the content guidelines, and disclose AI-generated content when you publish.
- Wrong cover dimensions. Use the spine width and cover size calculators before you design.
- Copying other listings. Study competitors, but write your own title and description.
- Setting a price without checking royalties. Printing cost changes what you keep.

Amazon KDP for beginners: common questions
Is Amazon KDP free to use?
Yes. KDP does not charge to publish. For paperbacks and hardcovers, Amazon deducts printing costs from your sales, which is why the royalty calculator is useful.
Do I need an ISBN?
KDP can give you a free ISBN for print books, and ebooks do not need one. Check the KDP Help Center for the current rules.
How much can I earn?
Nobody can promise earnings. Results depend on your niche, book quality and marketing. Read our Disclaimer and our guide with real dashboard numbers before you set expectations.
Can I use AI to write my book?
You can use AI tools, but KDP requires you to disclose AI-generated text, images and translations when you publish. AI-assisted work that you wrote yourself does not need disclosure. See our AI tools guide.
How long does KDP take to publish a book?
KDP usually reviews new titles within about 72 hours, but it can take longer. Plan your launch date with some extra time.
